The Lineage
of Masters
The roots of Kaisai-do span more than 150 years of tradition, carried forward by generations of Okinawan masters who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of true martial spirit. From Master Kanryo Higaonna to Master Toshio Tamano, each teacher has passed on not only technique but also wisdom, discipline, and compassion.
Their legacy forms the foundation of Shorei-Kan Europe, where these ancient teachings continue to live — uniting strength and harmony in every movement.
1853–1915: Master Kanryo Higaonna
Founder of Naha-te, the foundation of Okinawan Goju-ryu karate. He traveled to China to study martial arts and brought back techniques that combined inner strength, breathing, and discipline. His teachings laid the roots of modern Okinawan karate.
1888–1953: Master Chojun Miyagi
Direct student of Higaonna and founder of Goju-ryu karate. He developed structured kata and introduced Daruma Taiso, a series of exercises to harmonize body and mind. His philosophy emphasized the unity of softness (Go) and hardness (Ju).
1917–1998: Master Seikichi Toguchi
Disciple of Master Miyagi and founder of the Shorei-Kan system. He organized Goju-ryu into a systematic teaching method, making karate accessible to all practitioners. Toguchi's approach blended deep tradition with innovative pedagogy.
1942–Present: Master Toshio Tamano
Student of Master Toguchi for nearly forty years and founder of Shorei-Kan Europe. To highlight the joyful and healthful essence of karate, he renamed it Okinawa Budo Kaisai (Kaisai-do). Through more than fifty-five years of dedication, he has spread Okinawan martial arts throughout the world.

The Evolution of
Okinawan Budo –
From Tradition to
Kaisai-do
The art practiced within Shorei-Kan Europe is the result of over 150 years of Okinawan martial evolution, shaped by generations of devoted masters.
Beginning with Master Kanryo Higaonna, who brought the essence of Chinese Southern Boxing to Okinawa in the late 19th century, this lineage continued through Master Chojun Miyagi, founder of Goju-ryu karate, who sought harmony between strength and softness.
Master Seikichi Toguchi later refined these teachings into a structured and accessible method called Shorei-Kan, emphasizing precision, respect, and self-development.
Finally, Master Toshio Tamano, a direct disciple of Toguchi, carried this heritage into the modern world, renaming it Kaisai-do — a joyful way of practice that unites body, mind, and spirit.
Through this living tradition, the ancient roots of Okinawan budo continue to thrive, bringing health, balance, and meaning to people around the world.
